Second Department of Physiology

We held Satellite Symposium of the 5th Congress of the International Society for Autonomic Neuroscience (ISAN 2007) --- New Insights into Central Control Mechanisms of Circulation --- on October 3, 2007 at Hotel Granvia Wakayama, Wakayama City, JAPAN.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

School of Medicine

The subject matter of physiology is the foundation of the practice of medicine, and a firm grasp of its principles is essential for the practicing physician. In this course, we present the physiological functions of the human body in a way that the medical students can understand intricate mechanisms and control systems which normally allow all parts of the body to function in harmony. We explain the functions of the autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology, renal physiology, endocrine physiology, and so on.

Graduate School of Medicine

In Doctor’s Course of Graduate School of Medicine, the name of this laboratory is Division of Integrative and Molecular Physiology, Department of Physiological Sciences, Field of Structural and Functional Biomedical Sciences. We teach integrative physiology, molecular and cellular physiology, physiology of autonomic nervous system and circulatory physiology to the graduate students of Doctor’s Course. The graduate students perform the experimental study for integrative and molecular physiology under us.
In Master’s Course of Graduate School of Medicine, the name of this laboratory is Division of Integrative and Molecular Physiology, Field of Medical Sciences. We teach human structural and functional biomedical sciences, integrative molecular physiology and so on to the graduate students of Master’s Course. The graduate students perform the experimental study for integrative and molecular physiology under us.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Physiology is an integrative discipline that includes the study of molecules and subcellular components of the body, cells, tissues, organ systems, and interactions between all of these parts in health and in disease. In this laboratory, we investigate the function applying molecular biology to physiology. According to the rapid development of molecular biology, physiology is also changing largely. We aim at the wide research that both molecular mechanisms and integrative functions are taken into consideration. And we have a dream of protein treatment of various diseases using protein direct in vivo transduction into the brain.

MAJOR RESEARCH INTERESTS

  1. Central control mechanisms of circulation: effects of microinjection of new peptides into the brain on blood pressure, heart rate and local blood flow.
  2. Changes of the body function when the protein is transducted into the brain or the heart in vivo.
  3. Circadian rhythm and obesity.

To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first report of direct in vivo protein transduction into a specific restricted brain area.
